A study found that 28.6 per cent of pupils whose parents paid full private school fees earned 70,000 or more by their 30s. For those who attended private schools under the assisted places scheme the proportion was 18.2 per cent, and for those who attended state schools it was 7.6 per cent.

The fair trading watchdog reached a settlement with 50 private schools being investigated for price-fixing. Under the agreement, the schools would make an ex-gratia payment totalling 3 million into a charitable trust fund to benefit pupils who attended the schools during the academic years 2001-02 to 2003-04. In addition the schools would pay a nominal penalty of 10,000 per school. The schools would admit that their participation in the exchange of sensitive information.
